Pots, Pans, and the Architecture of an Economy

Archaeologists often get mocked in certain circles as the “pots-and-pans people.”
A throwaway line meant to belittle a discipline.
Ironically, those pots and pans have done more to reconstruct India’s economic history than speculative civilisational commentary.

This is not about romance.
It is about method.
And pottery - humble, fragile, abundant - is among the most powerful scientific tools we have for understanding how a civilisation actually worked.

Because pottery is not crqft. It is data.

1. POTS THAT REFUSE SIMPLE STORIES

Archaeology is stubborn. It resists narratives that arrive pre-packaged.
A shard unearthed in the wrong layer can shake an entire theory.

And India’s pottery record has been doing precisely that.

We were told there was a clean break between Harappan and non-Harappan societies.
The pots disagree.

Diversity across Indus settlements

Wheel-thrown red ware with black motifs - the “Harappan signature”- dominates Mature Harappan layers.
And yet regional ceramic styles persist everywhere: Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat.
Even at Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, Harappan and local non-Harappan pottery sit side by side.

This is not cultural isolation.
This is exchange.

Diversity within a settlement

Mohenjo-daro shows five distinct types of cooking pots - used by ethnically different groups living together.
One city. Many cuisines.
A shared economy, not a single identity.

Pottery, not poetry, captures this truth.

 

2. THE PAINTED GREY WARE PROBLEM

Painted Grey Ware (PGW) has long been the favourite prop in the Aryan Invasion/Migration narrative: find PGW → declare “Aryans were here.”

Alamgirpur breaks this neat flow.

Archaeologists found PGW in deep layers, dating to 2200 BCE - centuries before the supposed Aryan arrival, and long before the decline of the Indus Valley.

PGW also overlaps with Harappan layers at Sanghol near Ropar.
Other PGW dates: 2310 ±120 BCE (Kampil), 2160 ±180 BCE (Gosna).

Many of these sites lie closer to the Gangetic basin than to the Indus—reversing the presumed direction of movement.

Pottery does not respect imported historical scripts.
It records what actually happened.

3. JHUKAR CERAMICS AND THE MYTH OF REPLACEMENT

Older scholarship described Jhukar pottery as evidence of “external intruders” taking over Sindh after the fall of the Indus civilisation.
The shards say otherwise.

Jhukar ceramics begin around 2165–1860 BCE, well before the Indus decline.
They coexisted with Harappan pottery after 1800 BCE and rarely exceeded 8% of total ceramic assemblages - even in their strongest phase.

This is not takeover.

This is local adaptation within a stressed but surviving economic system - what noted archaeologist Dr M Rafique Mughal called “regional readjustments” after pan-Indus integration weakened.

Ancient India’s Pottery registers continuity, not collapse.

 

4. NBPW AND THE FALSE LINEAGE

North Black Polished Ware (NBPW) continues to be taught as PGW’s successor, a neat linear evolution from “Aryan arrival” to “Aryans urbanising Ganga plains.”

Wrong.

NBPW emerges in the middle Gangetic plain around 700 BCE, almost 1,000 kilometres east of PGW’s core region.

And at its peak (500–300 BCE), it formed only 5% of total pottery - coexisting with every other ceramic tradition. With its spread covering pretty much the entire sub-continent to beyond in Sri Lanka and south Asia. 

Economies evolve like ecosystems, not family trees.

5. TRADE: POTS AS EVIDENCE OF A CONNECTED ECONOMY

The Indus world was never insular.
Its afterlives weren’t either.

Sumhuram (Khor Rori), Oman

Indian red and black pottery appears in the earliest operational layers of this port—4th century BCE.
Material proof of Indian Ocean trade existing centuries before Roman sailors arrived.

Red Sea ports: Myos Hormos & Berenike

Cooking pots from Kalinga, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu show up between late 1st century BCE and 3rd century CE.

These are economic fingerprints—evidence of mobile labour, shipping circuits, cargo provisioning.

Rouletted Ware

Once assumed to be of Mediterranean origin, then “Indian but inspired by” Mediterranean, then as “local to Arikamedu.”

Science had other plans.

X-ray diffraction revealed that its mineral signature matches soils from Chandraketugarh –Tamluk in Bengal.

Multiple production centres.
Wide distribution across South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Presence even at Berenike in Egypt.

Pottery maps trade routes long before written archives do.

6. TECHNIQUES THAT TURN CLAY INTO EVIDENCE

Modern archaeology is not “pots and pans.”
It is physics, chemistry, stratigraphy, forensic sequencing.

Some of the tools used to reconstruct Ancient India’s economic history:

  • Thermoluminescence dating for ceramics → fixes the chronology of layers.

  • X-ray diffraction → identifies clay sources, pinpoints production zones

  • Petrography → reveals firing techniques, craftsmanship, economic specialisation.

  • Residue analysis → reconstructs diets, agricultural systems, trade in spices and oils.

  • Geochemical fingerprinting → tracks long-distance trade and port linkages.

This is empirical reconstruction, not ideological assertion.

7. WHAT POTTERY REALLY SHOWS IN INDIA’S ECONOMIC HISTORY

Not invasion.
Not mass replacement.
Not civilisational breaks.

But continuity, diversity, adaptation, and trade - the attributes of an economic system, not a cultural monolith.

Pots hold the rhythm of everyday life: who cooked what, who traded where, who lived together, who adapted when the climate shifted.

In a civilisation where stone was not the primary medium of memory, pottery becomes the archive.

A broken shard is rarely poetic.
But it is precise.

It tells us what the loud histories sometimes refuse to accept.
