Product Description
About the Book : Indo-Portuguese History and Historiography have gained a new dimension since Independence. Unlike the earlier literature on the subject, recent studies have diverted their attention from the roles and exploits of the colonial rulers to the socio-economic and cultural history of the people. In effect, they constitute a re-assessment of history and historiography in a post-colonial spirit.
The International Seminar on Indo-Portuguese History (ISTPH) was first convoked in Goa in 1978. This Seminar heralded a new approach to the subject and one which brought to light the wealth of the sources of Indo-Portuguese history. ISIPH-2 was held in Lisbon in 1980 and TSEPH-3 in Goa again in January 1983.
The essays in this volume have been selected from the papers presented during ISIPH 3. The first. two seminars dwelt on the sources and problems of Indo-Portuguese history. ISIPH-3 focused on navigation, trade and cultural exchanges, all of them old issues but subjecting them to new questions. The essays selected for this volume have a good representative and scholarly sampling. Niels Steensgaard, Mme Bouchon, K.S. Mathew, Gorge Winius, John Correia-Afonso, A.R. Kulkarni, Bacelar e Oliveira are among the twenty experts who have contributed to the richness of this volume. Prof. G.V. Scammell provides a note on the well-known historian-guide Prof. C.R. Boxer to whom the book is dedicated; T.R. de Souza's Preface as Editor is written in his inimitable lucid and scholarly style.
