About the Book : Goa-Kanara Portuguese Relations 1498-1763 is a posthumous work by the late Prof. B.S. Shastry. The Xavier Centre of Historical Research has a series of books on Portuguese studies and this is no.8 in the series. This work deals with the Portuguese arrival in India and late at Kanara; their attempts to take over Bhatkal; their fortresses on the Kanara Coast and their relationships with the Nayakas of lkkeri from 1499-1763. There are reference to Christianity and to trade and commerce in Kanara for the same period. About Author : B.S. Shastry was born on 17 August 1938 and passed away prematurely in Goa on 8 June 1991. He worked for his doctorate under the well-known historian and archivist P.S.S. Pissurlencar. He started his career in Goa as a lecturer in history at the Chowgule College (Margao, Goa) and later came to head the departments of history at the Centre of Post-Graduate Instruction and Research (Panaji) and the Goa University (Bambolim), respectively. Gifted with a pleasing personality, Prof. Shastry was research guide to a number of students and was often invited to take part in international and national conferences on topics of Indo-Protuguese history. He wrote and edited a number of books including The Kings of Keladi and the Portuguese (in Kannada), Studies in Indo-Protuguese History, Goan Society through the Ages, Bibliography of Dr. Pissurlencar Collection and Socio-Economic aspects of Portuguese Colonialism in Goa (19th-20th centuries). Charles J. Borges. S.J. is Director, Xavier Centre of Historical Research, Alto Porvorim, Goa. He has been a Jesuit since 1967 and after his training in philosophy and theology, did his M.A. and Ph.D. in history from the Bombay University. He is author of The Economics of the Goa Jesuits 1542-1759 and had edited or co-edited a number of other books including Goa and the Revolt of 1787, Goa and Portugal: Their cultural links, and Jesuits in India: In historical perspective. He has many published articles to his credit and has also lectured in India and abroad.
