About the Book : Proverbs and Folklore of Kumaun and Garhwal is the first of its kind. Appearing towards the end of the 19th century, the book is gifted with a rich collection of proverbs, axioms, sayings and phrases for particular occasions as well as the customs and manners out of which they arise. Clustering more than 200 themes arranged in alphabetical order, it is written in devanagari letters, followed by English translation with due regard to the hill accentuation. Apart from classified themes, an Appendix with 114 new proverbs has been suitably provided at the end.
About Author : Rai Bahadur Pandi Ganga Datt Upreti (Dec. 1, 1834- Aug. 1, 1910) was a gifted thinker and keen observer of people lives and their cultural ethos. He was a profound scholar of Archaeology on the one hand and Folklore on the other. His ethnological and linguistic research was widely acclaimed. On Jan. 1, 1910 Lord Mints, Viceroy and Governor General of India conferred the title of Rai Bahadur to Pt. Ganga Datt Upreti. Some of his better known works are, Percept of this World and the Next, Hill Dialects of the Kumanun Division, and History of Kumaun.
