W. Crooke (1848–1923) was a British orientalist and ethnographer who served in the Indian Civil Service, becoming a key figure in the study and documentation of Anglo-Indian folklore. Born in County Cork, Ireland, he contributed extensively to the understanding of Indian customs, beliefs, and traditions. He authored several notable works, including "The Tribes and Castes of the North-Western Provinces and Oudh" and "An Introduction to the Popular Religion and Folklore of Northern India." He also edited the journal Folk-lore.
