Govind Vinayak Karandikar (1918–2010), widely known as Vinda, was one of the most distinguished Marathi poets of the twentieth century. A poet, essayist, critic, and translator, he received the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1996 and the Jnanpith Award in 2003. In his 1991 Samvatsar Lectures delivered under Sahitya Akademi auspices, he examined what he called literature as a vital art, extending his inquiry to drama and cinema as kindred forms of creative expression.
