VIDYA DEHEJIA

Vidya Dehejia is the Barbara Stoler Miller Professor Emerita of Indian and South Asian Art at Columbia University, known for her extensive scholarship, teaching, and curation of exhibitions on South Asian art. With a background in classical Sanskrit and Tamil and knowledge of modern Indian languages, her work integrates archaeological, visual, and literary arts, including translations of ancient poetry and unpublished manuscripts. Her research spans from Buddhist art to North Indian esoteric temples, sacred South Indian bronzes, and art from the British Raj. Dehejia has published 24 books and numerous academic papers, and her book "Indian Art" (1997) is a standard textbook for undergraduates. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government in 2012 and the Freer Medal in 2023. Dehejia is the author of "Slaves Of The Lord (The Path Of The Tamil Saints)" and "Antal and Her Path of Love: Poems of a Woman Saint from South India."
