Verrier Elwin (1902–1964) was a British-born anthropologist and author who devoted much of his life to documenting the folk culture of India's tribal communities. A scholar of tribal oral literature, he wrote extensively on the myths, songs, and social life of indigenous peoples across central and northeastern India, producing works that remain standard references in Indian ethnology and folklore studies. Folk-Songs of Chhattisgarh represents one strand of that sustained archival effort.
