Thoppil Mohamed Meeran (1944–2019) was an acclaimed Indian author who wrote in Tamil, known for his vivid depictions of the socio-cultural landscape, particularly the lives and culture of Muslims, in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. He was awarded the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1997 for his novel Saivu Narkali (The Reclining Chair), making him the first Tamil Muslim writer to receive this honor. Meeran authored six novels and seven short story collections, with notable works including Oru Kadalora Kiramathin Kathai (The Story of a Seaside Village), துறைமுகம் (Turaimukam: Harbour), and கூனன் தோப்பு (Kuunan Tooppu: The Grove of a Hunchback). His writing often incorporated the unique Tamil dialect mixed with Malayalam spoken in the region. He also received several other literary awards, including the Tamil Nadu Kalai Ilakkiya Perumantam Award.
