Tamil University, established in Thanjavur, promotes higher research in Tamil language, literature, and Tamil Nadu's cultural traditions. It publishes scholarly works on regional heritage including The Great Temple at Tanjore, a study of the Brihadeeswarar Temple — the Chola-era UNESCO World Heritage monument built by Rajaraja Chola I around 1010 CE.
