Sisir Kumar Das

Sisir Kumar Das (1936–2003) was a distinguished Indian scholar of literature, linguist, poet, playwright, translator, and comparatist, renowned for his extensive contributions to Indian literary historiography. He served as Tagore Professor at Delhi University from 1980 to 2001. Das is particularly recognized for editing the multi-volume "The English Writings of Rabindranath Tagore" and for leading the Sahitya Akademi's ambitious project, "A History of Indian Literature," which sought to integrate the literary traditions of India's diverse languages. His volumes include "A History of Indian Literature (1800-1910 Western Impact: Indian Response)" and "A History of Indian Literature: 500-1399 (From the Courtly to the Popular)," which devised new methods for understanding inter-literary interactions and cultural dynamics across different periods. He also translated classical Greek literature into Bengali and authored works for children.
