P. S. Subrahmanya Sastri (1890–1978) was a distinguished Indian scholar with mastery in both Sanskrit and Tamil languages and literature. He holds the notable distinction of being the first person to translate Tolkāppiyam, the earliest extant Tamil grammar, into English. Sastri earned the first Ph.D. degree in Tamil from the University of Madras and held professorships at institutions like Rajah's College, Thiruvaiyaru, and Annamalai University. Beyond his work on Tolkāppiyam, he also undertook the English translation of Patanjali's Mahabhashya and demonstrated proficiency in several other languages, including German, French, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
