Nissim Ezekiel

Nissim Ezekiel (1924–2004) was born in Bombay into the Bene Israel Jewish community and studied philosophy in London before returning to India. He is regarded as the most influential voice in post-independence Indian poetry in English, and his poems appear in NCERT textbooks. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for Latter-Day Psalms and the Padma Shri in 1988. His poem 'Night of the Scorpion' is among the most widely anthologised in Indian English literature.
