Masti Venkatesha Iyengar (1891–1986), who wrote under the pen name Srinivasa, is regarded as the father of the Kannada short story and one of the most prolific writers in the language, with over 123 books in Kannada and 17 in English. He received the Jnanpith Award in 1983. His work ಭಾವ (Bhava), published in three volumes, is his autobiography. He served in the Indian Civil Service before devoting himself fully to writing.
