Kalidasa is celebrated as the greatest poet and dramatist in the Sanskrit language. Believed to have lived around the 4th or 5th century CE, likely during the Gupta period, he is revered for his mastery of poetic imagery, emotional depth, and elegant verse. His three surviving plays are Mālavikāgnimitram, Vikramōrvaśīyam, and his most famous work, अभिज्ञानशाकुन्तलम् (Abhijnanasakuntalam). His epic poems include Raghuvamsa and कुमारसम्भव (Kumarasambhavam), and his lyric poem Meghadutam remains a classic of the genre.
