M. T. Vasudevan Nair (1933–2024) was an eminent Indian writer, screenplay writer, and film director, primarily working in Malayalam literature and cinema. A recipient of India's highest literary honor, the Jnanpith Award (1995), and the Padma Bhushan (2005), he left an indelible mark across various creative domains. His literary works, often considered classics, explore the psychological and emotional undercurrents of life in Kerala, delving into the decline of traditional matrilineal family systems and reinterpreting Indian epics. Nair's debut novel, Naalukettu (1958), won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, and his masterpiece, Randamoozham (The Second Turn), reimagined the Mahabharata from Bhima's perspective, published in English as Bhima Lone Warrior. Other notable works include the novels Manju (மஞ்சு) and Kaalam (காலம்), and short story collections like Kuttiedathi and Other Stories. He also had a significant impact on Malayalam cinema, writing and directing critically acclaimed films and winning the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times.
