M. N. Dutta

M. N. Dutta (1855–1912), also known as Manmatha Nath Dutt (Shastri), was a prolific Indian translator of ancient Hindu texts into English. Born in British India, he received an M.A. in English Literature from Calcutta University and was awarded the title of Shastri. He is recognized for providing some of the earliest and often the only English translations of numerous Sanskrit scriptures, including the Valmiki Ramayana, Mahabharata, various Puranas, and the Mahanirvana Tantra. Dutta was a member of the Royal Asiatic Society and played a significant role in making these classical texts accessible to a wider audience through his translations and publications in his monthly magazine, 'Wealth of India'.
