Lokesh Chandra

Lokesh Chandra (born 1927) is a distinguished Indian scholar and Indologist renowned for his extensive contributions to Buddhist iconography, Tibetan studies, and Indian cultural history. He has authored and edited over 300 books and hundreds of articles, including monumental works such as the multi-volume Dictionary of Buddhist Iconography and a Sanskrit-Chinese Lexicon. A former member of the Rajya Sabha and president of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Chandra's vast scholarly output, including Cultural Horizons of India, encompasses Tantra, Buddhism, art, archaeology, language, and literature, furthering the understanding of Asian civilizations. He also edited the writings of his father, the Vedic scholar Raghu Vira.
