Kottayathu Thampuran

Kottayathu Thampuran

Kottayathu Thampuran (fl. 17th century), also known as Veera Kerala Varma, was a distinguished Malayalam poet and playwright, particularly celebrated for his contributions to Kathakali literature. He is credited with writing four attakathas (Kathakali plays) based on Mahabharata stories, which marked a significant shift in Kathakali narratives that had previously focused primarily on Ramayana themes. His notable works include Kirmeeravadham Kathakali and Nivathakavacha Kalakeyavadham, which are considered foundational in establishing Kathakali's theatrical conventions and character archetypes. Beyond his literary prowess, Thampuran was also recognized as a statesman and musician.
