Kapila Vatsyayan (1928–2020) was a towering Indian scholar, art historian, and institution-builder, widely recognized for her profound expertise in Indian classical dance, art, architecture, and cultural studies. She served as the founding director of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), a Member of Parliament, and a bureaucrat. Vatsyayan authored over 20 books and 200 research papers, demonstrating an interdisciplinary approach that connected theoretical knowledge with practical understanding of Indian arts. A trained dancer herself, she studied Kathak, Manipuri, Odissi, and Bharatanatyam. Her published works include selections from Vasudeva Sharan Agrawala, Ancient Springs and New India, and Nature, Tradition and Originality. She also edited several volumes of Dhrupad Annual. Vatsyayan received numerous accolades, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (1970), the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award (1992), and India's second-highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan (2011).
