Kalpana Bardhan is a scholar and translator specializing in Bengali literature, holding a Ph.D. in Economics from Cambridge University. She is a Research Associate at the Center for South Asian Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Bardhan has translated numerous Bengali literary works over two decades, including collections of stories, novels, and Rabindranath Tagore's song lyrics, and received the Sahitya Akademi Award for best English translation in 1998. She edited The Oxford India Anthology of Bengali Literature, a two-volume series that comprehensively surveys 130 years of Bengali writing, with Volume II covering the period from 1941 to 1991.
