K. Shivaram Karanth (1902–1997) was a celebrated Indian novelist, playwright, ecological conservationist, and Yakshagana artist, primarily writing in Kannada. Often hailed as the "Rabindranath Tagore of Modern India," he was awarded the prestigious Jnanpith Award in 1978 for his novel Mookajjiya Kanasugalu. Karanth's prolific literary career spanned over eight decades, resulting in more than 400 works, including 47 novels, plays, short stories, and encyclopedias. His notable works include The Same Village,The Same Tree and A Shrine for Sarasamma. He was also a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award.
