John Stratton Hawley is the Claire Tow Professor of Religion at Barnard College, Columbia University, and a leading authority on Bhakti traditions and the devotional religious life of North India. He has authored or edited approximately twenty-five books on Hinduism, Indian religions, and the comparative study of religion. His notable works include Songs of the Saints of India and Three Bhakti Voices: Mirabai, Surdas, and Kabir in Their Time and Ours, which explore the lives and poetry of prominent poet-saints. Hawley is a recipient of numerous accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
