Himanshi Shelat

Himanshi Shelat (born 1947) is a distinguished Indian author who writes primarily in the Gujarati language, celebrated for her poignant short stories and novels. Born in Surat, Gujarat, she pursued an academic career, earning a PhD on V.S. Naipaul's novels and serving as an English professor. Shelat has authored approximately 20 books, with her literary debut in 1987. Her impactful work often explores themes of marginalization, women's experiences, and social realities, drawing from her direct interactions with vulnerable communities. She received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1996 for her short story collection Andhari Galima Safed Tapakan (Frozen Whites in a Dark Alley), and in 2024, she was honored with the Kuvempu Rashtriya Puraskar for enriching Indian literature. Her collection, Frozen Whites in a Dark Alley and Other Stories, showcases her acclaimed short fiction.
