Herman Tieken

Herman Tieken (born 1952) taught Sanskrit and Tamil at the University of Leiden from 1976 to 2010. He is the author of Kavya in South India: Old Tamil Cankam Poetry, which argues that the eight anthologies of old Tamil Cankam verse are indebted to Sanskrit kavya conventions rather than being an entirely independent tradition. He has published widely on kavya literature, the Mahabharata, Jaina canonical texts, and Indian inscriptions.
