Govardhanram Madhavram Tripathi (1855–1907) is considered the foremost novelist of nineteenth-century Gujarati literature. His magnum opus Sarasvatichandra, composed across four volumes between 1887 and 1901, traces the intertwined destinies of two lovers separated by circumstance and is widely recognised as the first major Indian social novel.
