Girish Karnad

Girish Karnad (1938–2019) was a towering figure in Indian arts, recognized as a celebrated playwright, actor, film director, and writer. Primarily writing in Kannada, his work extended across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi cinema. A Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, he was a pioneer of modern Indian playwriting, known for plays that use history and mythology to address contemporary issues, such as Tughlaq, Taledanda, Hayavadana, The Fire and the Rain, and The Dreams of Tipu Sultan. Karnad held significant positions, including Director of the Film and Television Institute of India and Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. His numerous awards include the Jnanpith Award (1998), Padma Shri (1974), and Padma Bhushan (1992). His collected works, such as Collected Plays: VOLUME TWO: TALE-DANDA THE FIRE AND THE RAIN THE DREAMS OF TIPU SULTAN TWO MONOLOGUES FLOWERS-BROKEN IMAGES, showcase his diverse theatrical contributions, which also include Tamil translations like அனலில் வேகும் நகரம் (Analil Veekum Nakaram), அஞ்சும் மல்லிகை (Ancum Mallikai), and சிதைந்த பிம்பம் (Citainta Pimpam).
