Emil Schlagintweit

Emil Schlagintweit (1835–1904) surveys the religious system of Tibetan Buddhism in Buddhism in Tibet, first published in Leipzig in 1863. A Bavarian private scholar who drew on materials gathered by his brothers during their scientific mission to India and Tibet from 1854 to 1858, Schlagintweit provided Western readers with one of the earliest systematic accounts of Tibetan Buddhist doctrine, iconography, and practice.
