Edward B. Cowell

Edward Byles Cowell (1826–1903) was the first Professor of Sanskrit at Cambridge University. He translated Asvaghosa's Sanskrit poem the Buddhacarita — an early literary account of the life and acts of the Buddha — into English, with the Sanskrit text prepared for the Anecdota Oxoniensia series and the translation appearing in the Sacred Books of the East.
