Dhan Gopal Mukerji (1890–1936) was born near Calcutta and studied at the University of Calcutta and the University of Tokyo before immigrating to the United States, where he received his degree from Stanford University and lectured in comparative literature. He became the first Indian-born author to win the Newbery Medal, awarded in 1928 for Gay-Neck: The Story of a Pigeon, a novel set partly during World War I. He authored numerous books introducing Indian culture, philosophy, and wildlife to Western readers.
