David Pingree (1933–2005) was a highly influential American historian of science and classicist, renowned for his work on the history of astronomy, astrology, and mathematics in the ancient and medieval world. A professor at Brown University, he specialized in tracing the transmission of scientific ideas across cultures, particularly from Mesopotamian and Greek sources to India, Persia, and Arabia. Pingree edited and translated numerous texts in Sanskrit, Arabic, Greek, and Latin, and his works include the comprehensive Census of the Exact Sciences in Sanskrit and Jyotihsastra: Astral and Mathematical Literature.
