William Dalrymple investigates the collisions between colonial power and local resistance in South and Central Asian history. Return of a King, shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize in 2013, was the first account of the First Anglo-Afghan War to incorporate contemporary Afghan sources, including epic poetry and previously untranslated biographies. Dalrymple is a co-founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival and has won multiple major history awards, including the Wolfson History Prize for White Mughals and the Duff Cooper Prize for The Last Mughal.
