Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and recipient of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize. Jean-Claude Carrière (1931–2021) was a French novelist, screenwriter, and Honorary Oscar recipient known for works including The Unbearable Lightness of Being and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. In The Power of Buddhism, first published in 1996, the two met in Dharamsala to discuss democracy, human rights, violence, education, and environmental crisis through the lens of Buddhist thought.
