Bharat Ratna Shri P.V. Kane

Pandurang Vaman Kane (1880–1972) was a towering Indian Indologist, Sanskrit scholar, legal historian, and educationist, known for his monumental five-volume work, 'History of Dharmashastra,' spanning approximately 6,500 pages, which meticulously documented ancient and medieval Indian religious and civil law. A recipient of India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1963, Kane also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Bombay University from 1947 to 1949 and as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 1953 to 1964. He was conferred the title of Mahamahopadhyaya for his profound scholarship. His Marathi work, न्याय व्यवस्था आणि मीमांसा दर्शन (Jurisprudence and Mimamsa Darsana), reflects his deep engagement with Indian legal and philosophical traditions.
