Bani Basu (born 1939) is a prolific Bengali novelist, poet, essayist, and former Head of the English department at Bijoy Krishna Girls College, Howrah. She is a recipient of the Ananda Puraskar (1997) and the Sahitya Akademi Award (2010). A Plate of White Marble, her novel first published in Bengali in 1990 and translated by Nandini Guha, tells the story of a widow who defies social expectations to begin life afresh; the novel was later adapted into a Bengali film.
