Abanindranath Tagore (1871–1951), a nephew of Rabindranath Tagore, was the principal innovator of the Bengal school of art, forging a Swadeshi aesthetic at a time when Western models dominated Indian artistic practice. He was equally celebrated as a writer, and his works Rajkahini, Khirer Putul, Nalak, and Budo Angla are landmarks of Bengali children's literature. Nalak, translated into English by Urbi Bhaduri and published by Niyogi Books in 2019, traces in parallel the journeys of the Buddha and a village boy named Nalak.
