Amalananda Ghosh (1910–1981), widely known as A. Ghosh, was a pivotal Indian archaeologist who served as the Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) from 1953 to 1968. Educated in Varanasi, Allahabad, and at the Institute of Archaeology in London, he joined the ASI in 1937 and spearheaded numerous excavations and explorations across India, including significant work at Harappa, Bikaner, and Taxila. Ghosh was instrumental in shaping Indian archaeology post-independence, initiating projects like the Temple Survey Project and establishing the School of Archaeology. He authored and edited many influential works, notably 'An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology', a comprehensive reference work on the subject, and several volumes of 'Indian Archaeology: A Review', documenting the ASI's annual activities.
