A. Dakshinamurthy

Professor A. Dakshinamurthy (born 1938) is a highly renowned Tamil scholar, writer, orator, and a celebrated English translator of classical, medieval, and modern Tamil literature. He is a pioneer in the field of translating ancient Tamil classics, having provided the first complete and faithful English translations of 19 classical Tamil works, including all 13 Sangam anthologies. He has authored several scholarly books in Tamil and nearly 100 research articles, and was honored with the Indian Presidential Award for Lifetime Achievement in Classical Tamil ('The Tolkappiyar Award') in 2015. He presents a scholarly edition of Pattuppattu, a collection of ten idylls from classical Tamil poetry, providing the original text, transliteration, and comprehensive translations in both English verse and prose.
