महामहोपाध्याय कविराज श्यामलदास (Mahamahopadhyaya Kaviraja Shyamaldas, 1836–1893) was commissioned by Maharana Sajjan Singh of Udaipur to compile an authoritative history of Mewar. The resulting four-volume work Veer Vinod is regarded as the earliest detailed written history of Mewar and a landmark in early Hindi historical literature. Shyamaldas was conferred the honorary title Mahamahopadhyaya in January 1888 and is recognised as one of the first modern Indian historians.
